“As a budding Russophile I thought this would be great. It has the elements, but three episodes in I'm getting disappointed and will fast forward the rest. First of all, they keep talking about Europe's border to Russia. As most Europeans should know, and definitely the hosts, Russia IS part of Europe. In fact it covers 39% of Europe, the 'edge of Europe' is actually some 2500km further east. Just doesn't sound serious when repeated over and over.
That aside, this podcast feels a bit like listening to a not too charismatic stranger re-tell their holiday in a pub. (Or worse, their bog standard Western definition of spirituality. I share it, which only makes it even worse to listen to.) There's so much oppurtunity to interview and listen to people from this under-reported borderland between the West and Russia. Unfortunately we don't, we just hear the 'adventurer's' re-telling of what he sees, such as that border controlls can last up to 10 mins sometimes.
Probably interesting for someone who's never travelled in Eastern Europe but I would expect more from The Telegraph.”Read full review »
