EF#43: The Gut Health Benefits of Artisan Brewed Water Kefir with Maya Krikke
Listen now
Description
My guest today is Maya Krikke, the sole Founder & Artisan Brewer of Myk’s Kefir (soon to be MYMY. Operating out of the Food Connect Shed in Brisbane, Australia, she is one of 37 small businesses seeking to change the food ecosystem. Commercially crafting audacious yet extraordinary probiotic drinks since 2015, her mission to make ethical and sustainable decisions for packaging, ingredient sourcing, and minimal food processing, has yielded potent, small-batch, artisan ferments of the most outrageous and exquisite flavours one could imagine (like the Gin lovers’ compliment, the organic Rhubarb & rose scented Geranium). Armed with a vision to better educate and communicate the science-based secrets of tibicos (water kefir) cultures, she wants to enable access to any family home with the desire to learn more and create their own unique flavour. The MYMY probiotic pouch is like an equivalent to the Betty Crocker of home fermenting. Her debut kids probiotic workshop last week demonstrated that even a 7 year old can become a Brew Master in a day. In this episode we talk about: How Maya got into making kefir for herself and her toddler son Using juice vs fresh whole fruit to flavour kefir How Maya got into selling her kefir How Maya’s product is different from others The disadvantage of commercial fermented products How much more potent Maya’s kefir is to other commercially produced products My disastrous experience of exploding kefir!
