Couldn’t get past the actor’s voice for Lamar. Who cast them? LOL. They describe Lamar as debonair, suave and smooth. The voice sounds like Revenge of the Nerds with a slight lisp. Hard to take anything seriously so I had to quit at the absurdity. Lamar is not conning anyone with that voice.

Couldn’t get past the bad accents in the reconstructions

I tried twice to listen to the first episode. The voice actors make it sound like a cartoon - you cannot listen to this story without being annoyed.

For some reason there’s ‘acting’ in this podcast and it’s really annoying. So annoying I couldn’t keep listening.

I listened to the first episode and can get thru any more. Terrible voice acting. Could’ve been an interesting story line but the acting is terrible.

Fascinating story, but let down by the cheesy reenactments.

The story is great, but that voice for Lamar is absurd. Difficult to not be really annoyed every time he speaks.

I’m sure there is an interesting story in here somewhere, but the over-the-top drama voicing scenes are so annoying and distracting, it’s hard to follow any kind of narrative.

Intelligent presentation, good story and insights. The large number of bad reviews is inexplicable.

I like the re-enactments, they are my favorite parts. The non acting parts are a little dry. Overall, interesting podcast. The way they used religion to make money is a tale as old as time.

Couldn’t finish it due to the acting/dramatisation! So cringe, so awful - it made an interesting story unbearable to continue listening to! Why do podcasters ruin, what should be, an intriguing story? Narcissism perhaps? Pity!

I didn’t expect to be as fascinated as I am. I had never heard of Keane. I’m only on Ep 4. She dissects the point of views - from the Con and from his Marks. It’s a highly intelligent analysis. This game is no respecter of education, class or intelligence. Anyone can get caught up in a Con.

This is a very interesting story and it’s well researched and told. I just can’t give it 5 stars due to the drama bits. They feel way too soapy and unrealistic. Dialogues were weak and cliché filled and the fake accents didn’t help. If you manage to ignore the drama bits, the podcast is pretty...Read full review »

The dramatised sections of this podcast really bring the story & characters to life. It’s one of the best told historical pods of recent years. And the final episode - a very unexpected ending. Witty and enlightening from start to finish.

The main subject Lamar has been given a weirdly camp voice. It’s very distracting

Voice acting made me turn off. Sounded like you hired napoleon dynamite

What could have been a very interesting story became unlistenable due to the awful, needless acting. A narrator telling the tale would have been great but the laughable voices and acted out scenes put me off and I didn't get past episode 3.Read full review »

Meh
Cool story I guess but dang BBC, y’all don’t know a single voice over actor that can do an American accent?? These a-holes are so bad!!! Especially the actor playing Lamar Keene; that wispy, lispy, breathy affectation is SO ANNOYING. Really, it’s distracting and laughable. I’d rather read this...Read full review »

Want to listen to the story but can’t handle the re-enactments. They’re awful.

Unfortunately I couldn’t make it past episode 2. The subject matter was interesting and the narrator is very good. But the dramatic re-enactments are so cringey and overused, a few minutes into ep 2 I had to turn it off and unsubscribe.

Interesting story & Vikki Baker does a great job presenting . I really liked the docudrama style. Reminded me of The Battersea Poltergeist . Didn’t want this one to finish

Having been on ghost hunts, to spiritualist churches and also watched many series of Most Haunted, this podcast was always going to capture my attention. To be honest, I don’t believe any of it but I still find it fascinating. I am as much interested in how people react to such things, when...Read full review »

The reenactments are SO bad that I can’t listen. Story is kind of wandering, lacks focus. Still, I wanted to listen, I was curious about the topic. But those over-done, breathy/lispy reenactments are nails on a chalkboard.
KellyThoreson via Apple Podcasts · United States of America · 02/20/22
The story grabbed my interest, but the idiosyncrasies in the re-enactments are too numerous and are grossly overdone for my taste. I barely completed the first episode then sadly decided my interest in the events did not outweigh my aversion to actors’ portrayals.

The story is fascinating. The dramatizations are truly woeful. Bargain basement performances that destroyed its enormous potential. Give it a miss.
Marmite12 via Apple Podcasts · Ireland · 02/15/22
This was a good series. Not quite top-notch BBC, but decent enough and a really interesting story. Sure, the re-enactments sound a little comic at times but that really didn’t spoil it for me - certainly not worth a 1-star review just for that.
dead joe - yo ho ho ho via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 02/12/22
The accents (especially Lamar!) and play is absolutely cringe. Takes away from an otherwise very interesting story.

Really good story, really annoying voices, struggled to get to the end!

I like the host and the subject’s interesting, but there’s way too many excruciatingly bad dramatic reenactments. It makes the podcast cheesey.
EnidaV via Apple Podcasts · Canada · 02/04/22
The dramatic readings made me laugh out loud many times, reminded me of Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, which I don’t think they were going for, it ruined an interesting story.
Racheytomo via Apple Podcasts · Great Britain · 02/03/22
Really enjoyed this but the re-enactments were a bit overdone and I was instantly distracted by the fact they are clearly British actors doing quite terrible American accents (and a video of Lamar on YouTube shows he didn’t speak with that weird breathy affectation either). I would have loved...Read full review »
