Good chats, or ads and questionable science?
I've been eating paleo for a few years and am a dedicated CrossFit guy. I was delighted to discover Fat Burning Man, and enjoyed my first few episodes. Abel James is a likable, earnest guy with great radio presence. He pulls from a vast network of gurus in the paleo and natural diet movement, has a good rapport with most of them, and the show itself is quite interesting, and occasionally informative. But therein lies the rub: many of Abel's guests are, frankly, kind of fringe practitioners. Their science is questionable, their advice is full of technical gobbledygook that's often impossible to replicate or even follow, and many of them conflict with each other. After more than a handful of episodes you will hear a ton of things that sound REALLY dicey, and end up more confused than when you started. The broad strokes are fine -- paleo eating is definitely a good thing in my book. Some guests are great. But some are just full of weird science fiction nonsense. As for Abel, he is of no help in sorting this stuff out. Far from confronting or challenging his guests, he basically just lets them say whatever they want. He responds to everything, no matter how far out there, with "totally. I do that too." Sure ya do. He also insists that all of his guests can totally be trusted because they're close personal friends (sure) and aren't trying to sell you anything... Which, of course, they are. 90% are plugging books. Abel himself is also constantly plugging his books, as well as his spam list, which I unsubscribed to pretty much immediately after determining it to be pretty worthless. So after about 15 episodes I'm kind of done. I really wanted to like this show but my BS meter is going off like a Geiger counter in Chernobyl.Read full review »
