Great story, poor podcast w/ endless preambles
While I’m sure the hosts are good people and excellent journalists, this is a bad podcast. It’s close to being very bad. It lacks direction and narrative momentum. The first two episodes are completely rudderless, filled with preambles and false starts. The hosts seem unsure how to tell the story, which is odd considering they also say they’ve been working on it for over a year. They pause incessantly to tell us how they will be sharing really crazy/morbid things later on. They start almost every thread of the story with “Now we’re going to talk about (whatever it is). And it’s pretty (insert adjectives).“ We are already listening, just get the story moving! It gives the entire podcast a disjointed, stop-and-go quality that makes for difficult listening. The two-narrator format also doesn’t work here: Cringe-inducing scripted banter that doesn’t sound like authentic conversation, but rather two infomercial hosts setting each other up for product placement spots. In the absolute cringiest moment of the first 4 episodes, one host remarks that Mrs. List was a “smoke-show” (a phrase popular with the Barstool crowd 10 or so years ago). It’s a forced line delivered over a guitar riff that feels absolutely crow-barred in and lands like a led balloon. I had to turn the podcast and come back a few days later. Woof. The hosts also commit the cardinal sin of all true crime podcasts: they constantly insert themselves into the story. There’s so many breaks to describe how certain things make them feel, it borders on unprofessional. When they get to the actual murders, it feels strangely rushed. They begin detailing the especially brutal murder of the older List boy, but it peters out just as they get going. The List tragedy is an awful, fascinating case on many levels. This podcast, despite it’s good intentions, does not convey any of it. I would suggest finding out more about it online.

Ugh
Stop talking about what you are GOING to tell us and just TELL US! Also, why does every sentence being with “well, Rebecca” or “well, other person” who’s name I can’t recall because I had to start blocking out this nonsense scripted dialogue. I grew up in Union County in the 70’s and I was...Read full review »

My family is from this area of NJ for generations. Awesome to get a spotlight on NJ, the Star Ledger and this awful awful case. My mom told me about this growing up, and it seemed weird it hadn’t received much of any attention amongst true crime peeps. Thanks for this podcast.
