Melanin!
Hi Jasmine. Thanks so much for your wonderful podcast. I’ve listened to every single episode while on maternity leave with my youngest. I wanted to thank you for the episode where you spoke about melanin. My son and I were at swimming lessons one day and he commented that a swim instructor that was there was the same as a daycare educator at his daycare center. I didn’t recognize the person and quickly realized he had associated two completely different people as the same person solely because they were both black. We talked about how they are both black but two different people. I then remembered your talk about melanin and explained to him the plain fact that some people have more melanin in their skin and some people have less. We talked about people in our lives who had more or less melanin. I felt it was a really concrete was to explain it to a 4 year old and it took the guess work out of how I had to respond to such a vast generalization he made based only on appearances. We now talk about melanated skin in picture books we read at bedtime too. Our collection of books in the “I am unique” and “we are all different” realm is vast but now we have something extra to grab on to and notice while reading. I just wanted to let you know it was really helpful for me. Can’t wait to listen to season 4. Thank you!

I love listening to Jasmine discuss the topics that can be a challenge to talk about like racism, inequality and privilege. She breaks them down so well and makes it feel easier to talk about. She is also motivating for me to make positive changes in myself, for my family and community.

I grew up in a home that taught me about the pain of overt racism. For 30 years, I figured my role in civil rights, if any, was to disapprove of overt racism and not practice it myself. After George Floyd's death, I began to think of the possibility of racism being a deeper problem in...Read full review »
