“I grew up in a home that taught me about the pain of overt racism. For 30 years, I figured my role in civil rights, if any, was to disapprove of overt racism and not practice it myself. After George Floyd's death, I began to think of the possibility of racism being a deeper problem in America. I had no idea how to even begin to approach it. I was intimidated. I didn't want to stir the pot. One day I woke up, still with this knot in my stomach, thinking about what my role should be. I remembered hearing about Jasmine's podcast from my good friend and decided I would give it a try. Before I clicked play, I truly said a prayer in my heart, telling God that if I was "moved" enough by Jasmine's podcast, it would serve as the push I needed to become more public with my developing feelings and growing understanding of systemic racism. I pushed play to season 2 episode 14, "What is Privilege and What Do I Do With It?" and by the end of the episode I felt empowered enough to begin my anti-racist journey with my first public post about identifying my white privilege. Since then, I enjoy listening (and re-listening!) to old and new episodes of the First Name Basis. Jasmine has given me many of the tools I needed to address questions, racist posts, comments, and memes, and the stronger confidence to engage in this work. I'm grateful for Jasmine and the time, research, and passion she puts into this blog. It has made a big difference in my life... and in turn the lives of my family.”Read full review »
