“Firstly, I'd like to say how much I enjoy the show First Things First overall. Following Nick Wright's climbing of the ladder with his guest appearances on various Fox sports shows, I'm ecstatic for him to have his own show in the spotlight, where he belongs. I felt strongly to leave a review has I've listened to The Herd since the day Colin moved over to Fox, and have since picked up several of Fox's sports talk shows, most prominently The Herd and now First Things First. My thoughts regarding the nitty gritty of the show:
Jenna Wolfe is an excellent moderator on First Things First. Not only does she facilitate conversation smoothly and rarely miss a transition, but she also holds her own on a show with two very strong personalities where argument and jokingly brash comments are a commonality. It takes a special talent to facilitate a sports talk show in today's day and age of extreme sensitivity and she has done so seamlessly and with interest to the listener.
I cannot say enough about Nick Wright and his role on First Things First. He is the glue that holds the team together. With all of the potential subjectivity regarding sports talk and opinions, Nick has always laid the foundation of his arguments through objective thoughts and numbers, which as an avid long time sports fan, is highly appreciated. It becomes tiresome with the anonymity of the internet to hear every person on twitter blurt out asinine and groundless sports opinions without needing any reasoning or fact behind it. It is a breath of fresh air to hear "cold hard facts" if you will, regarding sports analysis in a time where unfounded opinions are rampant. Nick is the reason I listen to First Things First and I hope his career flourishes in his new role that fits him wonderfully.
Lastly, CC. Unfortunately, despite my bias having attended The Ohio State University and sharing my passion for the buckeyes with CC, he is the reason I must give First Things First 4/5 stars. Many of the groundless and unfounded opinions I spoke of, are supported by Chris. I often find him argumentative with Nick, not in an interesting or constructive way, but in the sense of "I played the sport, what would you know" way. Although I appreciate the raw upbringing and experiences CC has to share about his ups and downs as a hall-of-fame NFL receiver, many times he uses this as a crutch to make arguments that simply don't make sense. Additionally, when other players come on the show as guests (i.e. Ray Lewis), these opinions and unfounded statements are augmented as two players then piggyback off each other, when in reality Nick is the only one making sensical arguments. Although sports talk is founded on opinions, the best opinions are ones based on well thought out scenarios and facts. Rarely do I see that from CC. Finally, perhaps because Chris Carter is a hall-of-fame athlete and intimidates, or because he often simply uses an escalating voice to talk over Nick to make his point, Nick isn't able to counter him in many of these arguments. This unfortunately is a negative aspect to the show for me.
Again, overall First Things First is a phenomenal sports talk show and I will continue to listen to the podcast. However, despite the edgy and diverse aspect Jenna brings on top of Nick's versatility and unique opinions, CC has far to go in his contributions to the show in which I'm unsure he will ever achieve.”Read full review »
