“I subscribe to many freethought podcasts - and being a fan of the FFRF, FreeThought Radio was one of the first ones I listened to on a weekly basis. However, I found that as my scope of similarly themed podcasts began to grow, I listened to this one less and less - to the point where now I've unsubscribed altogether. To put it bluntly, this podcast needs a new format, new hosts.... or both.
Dan & Annie spend far too much time chortling over religious news items that are seemingly discussed as nothing more than a means for them to point out the silliness of their nature. To be sure, some of these items are important and noteworthy - however, the comments and critique they provide is usually not insightful, and mostly just comes off as biased and superficial.
The show does get some interesting and important guests - but due to the constant interruptive and unskilled interviewing techniques usually employed by the hosts, rarely does a listener acquire anything more than a surface understanding of the arguments / subjects that are discussed. Most of the interviews last less than 20 minutes, which is nowhere near enough time to extract any valuable information from their guests - this is truly disappointing considering the caliber of authors, experts, etc. they are able to get on the show.
Combine this with the fact that the program devotes about 10 - 15 minutes of each podcast to buffer music - a large dose of which are Dan's corny anti-religious piano compositions - and you end up with a podcast that is heavy on rhetorical filler, and light on real freethought substance.
In my opinion, podcasts such as Point of Inquiry, American Freethought or Reasonable Doubts provide a much better format and more informative content.”Read full review »
