“It has taken awhile to write this because I don’t tend to review things. Make no mistake, it was 5-stars at first listen, but only after trekking through most of the backlog do I feel truly confident in saying FRIGHTDAY is my favorite podcast.
A recent move left me approximately one planetary core apart from my lifelong friends and horror compadres, so I turned to podcasts for something to fill the film discussion void. It was hit and miss - mostly miss - until this one. In addition to film reviews, Sam, Byron, and Kelly touch on genre news and (counter) culture, but their chemistry as friends is how they really dug their hooks in me. Each with their own interests and perspectives, they provide three unique approaches to each discussion, which I now consider necessary to the horror review format because it’s so easy to just agree that something is good or bad and be done with it. This is most evident in Episode 17 with Muck, one of the worst horror movies of all time by most accounts, whose discussion (deservedly) is usually caveman noises and grimacing. Somehow they found discussion in it, and that’s what I look for in film criticism.
Of course, you can’t review FRIGHTDAY without addressing one of its best parts: Captain Kelly’s Cryptids & Conspiracies. Kelly researches and relays cases of the paranormal and unexplained to her cohosts in efforts to overcome their skepticism. It almost never works but it’s always fun, and at times it can be seriously compelling.
All in all, listening to FRIGHTDAY feels like being with my friends again, talking about scary movies, sharing creepy myths, and just enjoying everything about the horror genre.”
