“I normally find the discussion on this podcast, precise, illuminating and temperate. It usually manages to rise above political party allegiance, whilst holding all political parties to account. Cavendish utterly failed to live up to this standard, summarising the history of immigration over the last 20 years, as somehow being solely the result of Labour Party policy and leadership, and managing to avoid mentioning how Tory policies and rhetoric over the last 14 years might have also contributed to the grave situation we are now facing. I was shocked to hear such a partisan account, and that it went entirely unchallenged. Further to this Cavendish seemed to give succour to the accusations of ‘two-tier’ policing, and also (preposterously) claimed to be able to intuit the concerns ‘of a silent majority’, which is a low, populist device and often the preface to a dogwhistle. She offered very little clarity on what measures might alleviate the situation in the short or the long term, whilst sneering at the present policing approaches to the unrest. It seemed at the very least an unhelpful contribution to discussion, and at worst seeking to pass the political blame, even at the risk of seeming to encourage the unrest itself.”
