Two of the best interviews yet
The last two Geek's Guide episodes were some of host David Barr Kirtley's best interviews yet, featuring Prof. Janna Levin's enthusiasm for black holes and the many ideas for short stories they spawn; and long-time panel participant (and fan favorite) Erin Lindsey on her newest novel. I've been waiting for that last interview, and it did not disappoint. As usual, each episode resulted in more titles for my TBR list. But listening to this podcast is its own reward. Invariably, I learn something new, or hear a new angle on a familiar topic. The interviewees usually have just published a book, so the podcast is a great way to keep current. The format switches between interviews and panel discussions. For his interviews, it is apparent that Kirtley researches his subjects' creative output. He asks such insightful questions of them that they sometimes have to take a step back to savor the moment (and collect their thoughts!). He's an author of dozens of short stories himself, so Kirtley is well-suited to interview other authors. The best parts are where he leverages his encyclopedic knowledge of genre fiction---humbly, never showing off. His follow-up questions arise naturally, not scripted. And he sure knows how to land a well-timed self-deprecating joke. As for Geek's Guide panel discussions, Kirtley has gathered an impressive cast of mostly recurring guests who enjoy opining on various themes in fiction or movies, or TV series, etc. He leads each discussion on a specific topic, and they are a lot of fun, but especially whenever Tom Gerencer, Matt Kressel and Andrea Kail appear together, which often results in comedy gold. In the Levin interview, Kirtley admits his own creative output has suffered due to podcasting taking over his life. But his sacrifice is our benefit, and only an author with his experience could bring such love for the craft, attention to detail, and respect for his subjects, to each interview and panel. If you're any bit of geek, you need this podcast in your week.Read full review »

Loved the Richard Dawkins episode and the Hitchhikers Guide episode! Suggestion for an episode. Terrible religious endings to sci-fi shows, cover Lost, Quantum Leap, Battlestar Galactica. I'm sure there are more. I fear Fringe might do something like that too. Also a Michael Moorecock...Read full review »
