Very western centric, had potential to be better
(NB this review is based on the first two episodes) This podcast is adequate and fairly interesting as far as two male British cinemophiles giving a standard film-school review and analysis of studio Ghibli's work through the format of an informal chat. But that's it. Given that it's funded by C4, I was hoping that it might delve a little deeper into worls of studio Ghibli, at the very least by including the views of a Japanese viewer, or at least a bilingual critic. I've often heard that non-japanese speakers and those without a deep understanding of Japanese culture miss a great deal of the depth and richness of SG films and it seems that this would have been an excellent opportunity to try and explore some of that. In the spirited away episode there was minimal (perhaps even zero?) mention of Shinto that, to anyone with even a passing interest in Japanese culture, clearly underpins a great deal of the movie. I would also have hoped that a well funded podcast dealing with a canon of films that so expertly realise a sense of enchantment, wonder and magic would perhaps try to reflect this in its own production values. There is some reasonably nice music but its awkwardly inserted into the discussion and the whole thing feels like a fairly rushed discussion recorded in one sitting. I wait for the day that studio ghibli gets the podcast treatment it deserves from a team that have mastered the art of story telling, discussion and sound design that are the hallmarks of the best podcasts available today.Read full review »

I haven’t seen only about 4 of the movies covered, so I’m excited to get to those episodes!

I’m really enjoying learning about the background of these films that I love. I especially found the extra trivia at the end of the credits great as I’ve just been given the poster from totoro as a gift and was wondering about the girl in it. Great pod cast. Hope you do all the movies.
