Love/Hate = Hate/Love
This is an exceptionally difficult review to write. I am so conflicted about this podcast, and I have listened to ~90% of the episodes posted over the years. Conceptually, I think it is brilliant. Having two open minded women speak frankly about porn is what drew me in. Yes, I am a male, but I tend to view content with my female partner in mind or together with her. We have also listened to the this show together more than once. I personally lean into more female friendly porn than the stereotypical male fantasy porn out there. What does that say about me? I am not really sure. So, yes for the content! Where does it fall apart for me? In short, the hosts. Contrary to what they say, they are often very judgmental of the content they talk about. Its not so much porn “review” as they call it, and more of projection of their own preferences and hangups. How can this be? Well, its natural to always bring your own worldview into any film review, regardless of genre. However, the hosts want us to believe this is all done from a comedic bent and I think that’s where it loses its way for me. Yeah, sex can be funny, and it should be pointed out when it is. The problem is that the hosts are decidedly unfunny and seem sometimes uneducated on the points they are trying to drive home. I want to be able to look to shows like this as vehicles for freeing peoples’ minds and shaping their opinions. Unfortunately I often feel like I am being ram-rodded into a constricted point of view that, while different from my own, is just another conservative box that judges what it outside of it. The worst part? The hosts voices. I literally cringe sometimes at the silly catch-phrasey-ness of the thing. I wish I could speak differently about that aspect, but it would be disingenuous. I love it when they occasionally have a guest because it adds a less annoying dynamic to the whole presentation. And I have a great idea. Before you get a new topic going that you aren’t really into, why not bring is a guest that is actually into that topic? It would be great to have a perspective of a fan or someone that owns that particular kink rather than only having the perspective of two women who clearly aren’t into it. Yeah, I will keep listening, but the schtick has gotten tired. Get back to the basics. The 69 seconds of sex news segment is lame. I don’t want proselytizing, just honesty. And check your own judgements ladies. They are coming through loud and clear, and obvious. You talk about not shaming while engaging in it constantly. Maybe edit the show? Good luck. This show is important. Make it seem like you deserve it.

More reviews of Girls on Porn
Listening is complete joy. The tone is perfectly balanced which is a testament to the intelligence and care of the hosts. They are hilarious when it comes to tearing into the ridiculous and down-right dumb aspects and products of porn and then on a dime can turn and be meditative and brilliant on...Read full review »

I never have been much of a porn guy, because it was all mostly fake and it just didn’t do it for me. This podcast uses much of the same criteria that I would in finding something compelling (I don’t just mean a “plot”) but true believability between the actors and how engaged they are in the...Read full review »
