“Based on the first episode, I found this a very odd podcast, with the hosts giving the impression that they hadn’t discussed the nature of the show in advance.
Geraldine seemed to want to apologise about the upcoming interviewee, mentioning how speaking with him is “terribly challenging” and giving the impression that even having him on was something the hosts were “wrestling with”. This sort of pre-judgment is not what I would expect from what I consider to be one of the better voices on the ABC.
I found the post-interview discussion unedifying. If you have issues with the speaker’s prognostic ability given their history on Iraqi regime change, or you feel his opinions on Palestine are “a non-starter” or are “offensive”, then challenge the speaker on these during the interview so they have the opportunity to put their best defence forward: this is what John Stuart Mill would encourage us to do. Please don’t speak behind a speaker’s back, without the right of reply - this is not what an interview-based programme should be about.
I appreciate it is the first episode, and so I will give it a few more goes to see if it improves. Here’s hoping it does, as a show that genuinely interrogates a wide range of viewpoints is sorely needed.”
