20 My son, keep your father's commandment,
and forsake not your mother's teaching.
21 Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
22 When you walk, they will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
and when you awake, they will talk with you.
23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
24 to preserve you from the evil woman,
from the smooth tongue of the adulteress.
Prov 6:20-24 ESV
GOD’S COMMANDMENT IS A LAMP
The father emphasized to his son that his instruction should affect every aspect of his life.
22 When you walk, they will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
and when you awake, they will talk with you.
Thus, he earnestly begs for his son to pay attention to his words. [v.20,21]
20 My son, keep your father's commandment,
and forsake not your mother's teaching.
21 Bind them on your heart always;
tie them around your neck.
It is a common observation that many children often resent parental guidance but come to appreciate those messages later in life. Very often, those who ignore the wisdom of their parents come to realize when they have kids of their own that it is good advice.
Parents are like broken records as they repeatedly instruct their kids. The importance of their instruction can’t be over-emphasized. They must ‘bind them in their hearts and tie it in their necks.’ A concerned father could not take second chances. The temptation of the world is so strong and appealing to a gullible young man.
The Jews believed its importance up to the point that they copied Deuteronomy 6:8, enclosed them in leather cases and tied them to the left arm and forehead. They call these phylacteries and they wore it like an amulet. The intention is right but the method is wrong because they should hid the law in their hearts.
Today, unlike the Jews, we honor God by hiding His Word in our hearts and obeying it. Scriptures should permeate our hearts, minds and souls as verse 22 admonishes us.
22 When you walk, they will lead you;
when you lie down, they will watch over you;
and when you awake, they will talk with you.
This is the guarantee that he won’t fall prey to the ‘forbidden woman’ She operates in the power of darkness, and she could lead him to stumble and fall. But, father’s words as God’s word is, like a lamp. As the psalmist declares, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”[Psa 119:105]
23 For the commandment is a lamp and the teaching a light,
and the reproofs of discipline are the way of life,
Even the son must consider subjecting himself to ‘his reproofs of discipline’ as the right path of life. The word of God is God’s instrument to make us righteous. As Paul declares, “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, 17 that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”[2 Tim 3:16]

23 The desire of the righteous ends only in good,
the expectation of the wicked in wrath.
24 One gives freely, yet grows all the richer;
another withholds what he should give, and only suffers want.
25 Whoever brings blessing will be enriched,
and one...

is a beautiful woman without discretion.
BEAUTY AND DISCRETION
What is discretion? This is a person's awareness of what is appropriate, respectable, well-mannered, or dignified. Thus, a woman with "discretion," in this...
