24.240 | Wisdom And Satisfaction | Prov 9:1-6 | God’s Word for Today with Pastor Nazario Sinon
Description
Text: Prov 9:1-6 ESV
1 Wisdom has built her house; she has hewn her seven pillars.
2 She has slaughtered her beasts; she has mixed her wine; she has also set her table.
3 She has sent out her young women to call from the highest places in the town,
4 “Whoever is simple, let him turn in here!” To him who lacks sense she says,
5 “Come, eat of my bread and drink of the wine I have mixed.
6 Leave your simple ways, and live, and walk in the way of insight.”
- Prov 9:1-6 ESV
WISDOM AND SATISFACTION
Here, Solomon continues the the imagery about wisdom. Wisdom is imagined as a noble, wealthy, and generous woman who has built a fine home. The main implication here is spiritual satisfaction and an attractive picture of life.
There is a picture of a wealthy woman giving abundant provision. The image of butchering and preparing animals was not something done without proper planning. Likewise, the imagery of mixing wine and setting a table implies hospitality. Wisdom intends to invite others and treat those guests well (v.3–5). There is no sense of lack but fulfilment and satisfaction.
Wisdom sending her servant girls to issue her invitation to dine. They call from the highest places in town, where they will easily be seen and heard. The images of feasts and banquets are meant to attract guests. This is common in Scripture. One story Jesus related is about a king who prepared a lavish feast in honor of his son. The king sent forth his servants to call the invited persons to the feast, but they rejected the call. Therefore, he ordered his servants to go back to the main roads and gather for the feast all whom they will meet at the road, both good and bad people (see Mat 22:1–10). Jesus has been sending believers into all the world to preach the gospel from the time He commissioned His disciples to do so (Matthew 28:18–20).
Like the messengers in verses 4-6, believers extend an invitation for others to come and know the One who is the Truth (John 14:6). Many of whom Jesus has invited were gullible and lacked good sense people. Generally, unbelievers are susceptible to the devil and his lies, are they not? (1 Cor 2:14). The apostle Paul writes the sad condition of our hearts as unbelievers before. He states, "you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience" (Eph 2:1–2).
Like wisdom personified as the noble lady, God in Christ has lavished us with His goodness and grace. There is no exhaustion of God’s grace. “ For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness because, in his divine forbearance, he had passed over former sins.”[Rom 3:23-25] Jesus even said that as the good shepherd, He gives His sheep an abundant life.[John 10:10]
