God’s Word for Today 9 Oct, 2024 1 The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish son is a sorrow to his mother. 2 Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death. 3 The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. - Prov 10:1-3 ESV A WISE SON MAKES A GLAD FATHER The wise son is a joy to his parents. This is emphasized by the contrast to the sorrow a foolish son could give to his parents.[v.1] It is because of the true value of his heart – fear of God. And, his fear of God is expressed in his righteous living.[v.2] Treasures gained by wickedness do not profit, but righteousness delivers from death. Indeed, a person may accumulate treasures by wicked means and gain fleeting pleasure from them. However, they amount to nothing ultimately. They could neither give true satisfaction nor can they prolong life. A billionaire who has accumulated enormous wealth, especially by dishonestly, by cleverness, or by outright violence, cannot buy even one more day to add to his allotted lifespan. History is full of stories about the untimely death of wealthy and powerful people. One very important note is that when death happens the unrighteous rich person is separated from his wealth forever. He has nothing to look forward to beyond the grave except suffering and eternal separation from God Let’s remember to what Jesus has said. He said in Mark 8:36-38, “For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul? For what can a man give in return for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him will the Son of Man also be ashamed when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.” And in Luke 12:20-21, He concluded about the the fate of the ungodly rich man, saying, “But God said to him, ‘Fool! This night your soul is required of you, and the things you have prepared, whose will they be?’ So is the one who lays up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.” The righteous, on the other hand. Is delivered from death. It’s not his own righteousness but Christ’s righteousness being clothed upon him. As Paul declares; “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”[2 Cor 5:21] Moreover, God promises to provide for the needs of the righteous.[v.3] The Lord does not let the righteous go hungry, but he thwarts the craving of the wicked. Did not Jesus teach us not to be anxious about our life's struggles? He pointed out that our heavenly Father feeds the birds, and He indicated that the disciples were of greater value than the birds (Mat 6:26). He said, "Do not be anxious, saying, 'What shall we eat?'" (Mat 6:31), and promised, "Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you" (Mat 6:33). The apostle Paul told the Philippian believers, "And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus" (Phi 4:19).
