Description
Digital is physical. Digital is not green. Digital costs the Earth. Every time we download an email, we contribute to global warming. In this episode we discuss the footprint of digital devices and what we can do to lighten the load on data centres. Gerry McGovern is an authority on all things digital carbon footprints and has written a book on it called World Wide Waste and has his own podcast devoted to the topic.  1.6 billion trees would have to be planted to offset the pollution caused by email spam. 231 million trees would need to be planted to deal with the pollution caused as a result of the data US citizens consumed in 2019. 16 million trees would need to be planted to offset the pollution caused by the estimated 1.9 trillion yearly searches on Google.  Around 90% of data is never accessed three months after it is first stored, according to Tech Target.  Gerry gives his top tips for minimising digital waste and how to create less in the first place!
