Not much of a point
There are a lot of movie review podcasts out there, many of them with interesting, insightful observations on the movies that are just hitting the local cineplex. This is not one of those. I gave it two shots, the episode on Deadpool and this week's review of The Witch. The conversation on Deadpool left me confused on the drive home, because it seemed to have been recorded by folks who don't actually like movies very much. This is impossible because I know Tim Grierson does, in fact, know and love (some) movies. Will Leitch? I...uh...don't exactly know what his presence on the show is supposed to contribute. He seems to be an extraordinarily lazy film-watcher. His insights, if that's what you want to call them, aren't very, you know, insightful. That's fine, I don't need to be wowed with every syllable out of their mouths, but what was really weird is how Leitch lowers the bar on the entriety of the conversation. I know Grierson is a smart, nuanced writer, but sitting next to Leitch inspires him to lower his game to a degree that's almost sad. The episode on The Witch reinforces this dynamic. Leitch doesn't like it, which is fine, but the reasons he doesn't like it have almost nothing to do with the movie he actually saw. His criticisms are predicated on a misreading of almost the entirety of the film. Maybe if someone explained it to him, he'd like it better. Anyway, in the face of this, instead of gently helping Leitch out of an embarrassing predicament, Grierson instead walks back much of what was a glowing review of Egger's film that he wrote last year, apparently to...what?...hell, I don't know why he does it. It's just embarrassing. If you just want to hear two guys talk about movies to fill the drive home or the train ride back to the suburbs, this is perfectly fine. You'll get a plot summary and some talk about movies. If you're looking for something rich and insightful, you'll need to look elsewhere. Or read Tim Grierson's reviews; they're good.Read full review »

More reviews of Grierson & Leitch
I've become a big fan of this podcast. They speak in a tone that may seem unusual against standard movie reviews but the candor and humor is refreshing. I can even get over the fact that Leitch sounds Jimmy Olsen on Percocet. Thanks guys and keep up the great work. If you have it in your...Read full review »

In today's media world where we are bombarded with so much streaming content available at the push of a button, it is more important than ever to support critics that can help inform your choices to best utilize your time and expand your opinions and understanding of...Read full review »

Tim and Will know their stuff and talk about it well. And they will discuss any movie you mention in a review here. I was going to be mean and force them to review American Anthem, but I’ll give them a choice between that and Midnight Run.
