A unique and informative spin on the retro gaming podcast
Along with Retronauts, Hardcore Gaming 101/GC9X is one of two retro gaming podcasts that I eagerly anticipate every week. Most retro gaming podcasts theme each episode around a game or series of games. HG101 has gone a different route, selecting 2-3 somewhat random games and ranking them against a continually growing list of the "Top 47,858 Games of All Time". This somewhat silly idea wouldn't work for most podcasters, but the HG101 crew has two things going for it 1) they're all extremely knowledgable about games and 2) they fully embrace the silliness. Ranking games involves some off-the-wall comparisons: Ape Escape or Maniac Mansion? Deus Ex or Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego? How did all of these games rank higher than Blue Stinger when they feature not a single appearance by Dogs Bower? HG101 covered two games I nominated that I've never heard covered on any other retro gaming podcast: The weird PC Engine photography game Gekibo and Knights of the Crystallion, an Amiga exclusive so obscure that it took me years to remember its name. This dedication to exploring the lesser known areas of retro gaming is a breath of fresh air when so much retro gaming content focuses on a small set of the popular classics. One minor complaint: xerxes kept pronouncing my name as "wit hag" when it's "with a g".Read full review »

Been listening to this podcast since the Game Club 199x days. It was great then and it's great now. More than just a roundtable discussion on the merits of the nominated games as a game, they're also a good and funny in-depth look at the games as a product of their times and how...Read full review »
