Metabolic Flexibility and Midlife Women's Health - #55

Description
Metabolic flexibility is the body’s ability to utilize different sources of fuel for energy - either glucose and fat, stored body fat or fuel from food. Most people are fueled by glucose because of their poor diet, especially the Standard American Diet. As we age, metabolism also slows down. Our mitochondria decrease in both quality and quantity, affecting our ability to produce energy within the cell. Signs that one is metabolically inflexible are weight gain, cravings between meals, and low energy. One of the top complaints I hear from my midlife women clients is that they are gaining weight around their midsection for no reason. Well, we know there’s a reason, it just hasn’t been found yet. Women are feeling confused and frustrated as to why they are gaining weight when all other variables haven’t changed. They are still eating the same diet, and attending their usual exercise classes, yet, the weight is coming on. With weight gain, comes a slew of other health issues, such as fatigue, disrupted sleep, increased anxiety/depression/stress, joint pain, brain fog, and more. Underneath the hood of weight gain and menopause, women open the door to chronic disease states, such as an increased risk of Alzheimer’s, Cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, and cancer. So, knowing what metabolic flexibility is and how it pertains to your overall health is quite important to your longevity plan.
