Old Man Puzzles just keeps Riddling along
What has (afaik) six legs, six arms, three brains, and a determination to solve weird and often wacky riddles? Adal Rifai, JPC, and Erin Keif. If you are already listening to this podcast, chances are you were listening to their other stuff already and so you get it. These three friends make it feel like you’re just hanging out with them on a drizzly Thursday during a power cut in a holiday cabin, and the only thing for entertainment is an esoteric book of riddles. It’s clear that they know each other well, so the rapport isn’t forced, but they also don’t rely on their own in-jokes for humour that would make it hard for random listeners to connect. The joy of this podcast isn’t so much in getting a big brain workout, but in listening to the hosts get angry with the bizarre clues and set ups, come up with their own (often cleverer) solutions, and roleplaying their favourite parts. Adal encourages listeners to send in their own riddles or lateral thinking puzzles for the team to solve, and I would guess that whichever ones make JPC froth at the mouth the most will be the most successful. If you like talking podcasts to keep you company while you do something else, but find Lore too creepy, This American Life too long-winded, and Stuff You Should Know too educational... this might be for you.

Riddle: What’s a great way to while away the hours? Hint: It involves some great comedians. Hint: It uses your ears. Hint: It sorta uses your brain. Answer: “Hey Riddle Riddle” This is a fun podcast with great, likeable personalities. A good show for those who love [read: hate] riddles!

The three improvisers on this show gel so well with each other, thanks to their approach to riddles and comedy. Great mix of serious riddle-solving and great comedy.

I am not exceptionally good at riddles. I like logic puzzles more. But more than my concern with my innate talent (or lack thereof), this podcast is so funny. Literally several times I’ve laughed aloud without expecting to do so. Can’t wait for more episodes!
