Like hanging out in a great record store
Take this one-question quiz to find out if you'll adore this podcast as much as I do: 1. Were you ever a college freshman who loved to hang out in the cool college record store, particularly in the pre-internet or early internet age, when discovering new music was hard?' If you answered yes, then yes, you'll love Highway Hi-Fi. Listening to it makes me feel like I'm a 19-year-old hanging out at Cheapo Discs in Boulder, filled with a sense of awe and excitement at the vast world of music to be discovered, and eager to absorb as much knowledge as possible from the slightly older yet infinitely wiser record store clerks. Some clerks were jerks, of course, but some were just as enthusiastic about teaching me everything they knew about good music as I was about learning. Hosts Ryan and Joe are the good record store clerks. Listen to a few episodes, and you'll be well on your way to impressing the record store clerks and record collectors in your life with your newly acquired knowledge of hidden-gem artists and tracks, as well as the surprising backstories behind specific songs and even genres. They seem to cover any and all music (except jazz and classical) from about 1955 (the dawn of the rock'n'roll era) through 2000, though they frequently dive deeper into the past and cover indie-ish music up to the present day. Basically, Highway Hi-Fi is all about the joy of going down every musical rabbithole you can find and discovering all the incredible stuff that's hidden down there.Read full review »
