“I'm so happy this podcast exists. There's a whole bunch of great non-fiction narrative podcasts and a handful of great philosophy podcasts, but I've never found a podcast that's both.
The basic set-up is that Barry Lam tells a story through narration, music and interviews, and along the way he and his guests will talk about what the story means - how philosophers have thought about key questions raised by the story and how we ought to think about them. The stories are engaging in their own right but the philosophical reflection makes them far deeper and more interesting.
Some of these podcasts have really grabbed me and stuck with me, even when they've been about things that I've heard lots of reporting about before. The two episodes called 'Soldier Philosophers' in particular stood out. I've never heard or thought about what Lam and his guests call the moral costs imposed on soldiers - the burden of making really complicated and consequential decisions, decisions that they have neither the experience nor the training to understand very well, and that they'll have to live with for the rest of their lives. I think the public has gotten used to the idea of volunteers endangering their bodily and mental health during military service, and of the physical and psychological training they receive to cope with the dangers. But the idea of endangering one's moral health, and of receiving training to cope with moral dangers, is not something that comes up very much in public discourse. And it's a really interesting and important topic.
Hi-Phi Nation is challenging but not at all forbidding. I think basically anyone who's up for a little careful listening will be able to follow and enjoy it, and even professional philosophers will find it stimulating.”Read full review »

Lam's style is laid back, but he has a flare for engaging story telling. I thoroughly recommend it to anyone...”Read full review »
