“Such an excellent podcast for Japanophiles like me! I've listened to every single episode and they have hugely expanded my understanding of this wonderful little island nation, as well as how it plays into the wider history of global events like WW2 or the economic troubles of the Great Depression. Isaac's presentation style is easy-going and engaging, while dealing with pretty difficult subjects respectfully and honestly. I love the fact that he covers a wide range of topics, from why the Dutch had a monopoly on early access to Japan to an awesome episode purely on the history of video games. There's a good variety of episodes, with some of the heavier mini-series broken up with equally fascinating ones about baseball, Japanese theatre, and the adventures of the first Japanese envoy to the West. All great stuff!”Read full review »

"Spolier alert:..."
Over-the-top delivery of... "scare quotes"
Parenthetical, usually unnecessary, recorded with noticeably inferior recording...”Read full review »
