“One year on, and I continue to really enjoy the Homesteady podcast. It has become part of my Saturday afternoon routine much as This American Life, Fresh Air, Sound Opintions have for the last 10-20 years (depending upon the show). I expect and hope that Homesteady will continue producing high-quality, entertaining information based on living off and with the land.
Much the same as with my other favorite radioshows (podcasts), I'm not a farmer or homesteader any more I am whatever subject that they are covering. But the quality of the stories and the production have a place in my life now: great information while I'm doing chores/errands/working.
However, I disagree with certain aspects of the Mono-Crop episode.
I do agree that the land should be utilized in/by a number of different ways/crops, including growing a garden, planting trees -- especially fruit and flowering trees. But I'm a big fan of a good amount of lawn. Where are the kids and dogs going to play? "Hey, Hannah. Watermelons are NOT soccer balls!"
Lawns serve a useful function, but just like many other aspects of our lives, we need to strike a balance.
A veg/herb/flower garden/s make a home a better place in many, many ways. As does a lawn. It is a playground right outside my front and back doors that I can watch my kid/s and dog and their friends play.
I realize that you are likely not really saying that everyone *should turn their lawn into gardens. I just wanted to add my bit to the discussion.”Read full review »

“Aust and the crew do a great job explaining common questions that most of us have. Working on smaller acreage, it can be tough to figure out how to make everything work. Keep up the great work. I'm subscribed and telling all of my friends to as well!”Read full review »
