Dog whistling.
I think this is an important story so I will give this podcast three stars. However, the way the reporter is choosing to tell this story reeks of dog whistling which makes it a difficult listen. The belabored discussion of how the maintenance worker stopped everything they were doing and “leered” was meant to evoke a predatory nature of maintenance workers. A bit much, but if factual then sure. However, then the reporter casually throws in that the workers may have been “undocumented” according to reports, and that the victim’s brother was knocking on the windows of the workers in the car but they “no speak English”. The reporter doesn’t address why their immigration status is in anyway relevant. She just tosses that in to allow the listener to come to their own conclusion about the workers i.e. lower class, predatory, undocumented, Hispanics. This is just one of a few questionable decisions in the reporting out tactics. It’s worth the listen to get this young woman’s story out, but just beware of the unnecessary dog whistling.

Cristina Corbin’s voice hooked me right in! I don’t usually listen to podcasts but I couldn’t put this one down. Excellent storytelling!

I have listened to MANY true crime podcasts and have never heard such a clear cut xenophobic and judgements way of reporting. 1. Who cares if the guys the brother was aggressively questioning didn’t speak English?! You’re in FLORIDA, which literally means “flowered” in SPANISH. 2. Why even bother...Read full review »
