Hooked Within Minutes
My son and I just finished listening to both episodes of “Hysterical”, and we LOVED it (thank you for the early release, Wondery+ subscription!) Th storyline is laid out well, easy to follow, and sadly, extremely relatable. As a listener, I could genuinely feel the fear and frustration the girls from NY must have been experiencing as they were slowly losing control over their verbal and motor functioning, and as a mother myself, I honestly have no idea how I’d react if my own child were thrust into a similar situation. To be told by medical professionals and government officials that every neurological & other medical test result is normal, the drinking water test results are normal, so the only logical conclusion is mass hysteria for those who are symptomatic!? That is not a diagnosis — it’s a copout. As someone whose experienced multiple “it’s all in your head” diagnoses only to end up in the ICU after emergency surgeries, I fully support second/third/forth opinions from as many health professionals as possible. On a lighter note: every podcast touched by Dan Taberski is pure gold! How Dan is able to create cheeky & subtle laughs while discussing such a serious matter is why he’s one of the best podcasters we will ever have! My son and I are eagerly anticipating the next episode, and look forward to hearing all 8 episodes of “Hysterical”!

Telling this story has so many potential problems. The host could fall into cliches about “girls” or mental illness. He could go all conspiracy crazy about toxins and government secrets. But he’s so good! Respectful and objective but warm and person-centered. The story is perfect for a podcast....Read full review »

Great podcast so far. I had no idea the TikTok tics phenomenon started way earlier back in 2011! Sadly mental illness and psychogenic illnesses are still not something anyone wants to accept as real illnesses. Our own stigmas and biases kept these girls from getting help and the parents are to...Read full review »
