“one of the best things about wine is the story behind it - the story from the earth and the location, but also of the people who farm that earth and the people thousands of miles away whose lives end up being affected by this thing - levi and his guests do an incredible job of telling these stories, simultaneously provoking and assuaging the wanderlust of people who may not have the time, the timing or the means to see these places or experience these phenomena for themselves.
on a more pragmatic level, the listener gets introduced to producers, somms and other people in the industry whose values they may feel kindredness with - and this really gives people a good sense for where they may want to drink their next glass or buy their next bottle of wine from...it's also incredibly helpful for providing a sense of the current dialectic between different philosophies, styles or approaches towards wine, and a contextual framework - scientific, historical or otherwise - in which we can situate the haphazard facts we may have acquired about certain wines - i.e. why some varietals adopt the character they have, why some vignerons adopt the practices they do, why some beverage directors or portfolio managers have chosen certain wines or regions to champion...
levi and his guests all know insane amounts about wine, yet they are still so humble, curious, and fascinated - this really just emphasizes that when one truly loves something, the consciousness of self and ego becomes suborned to the consciousness of the object of worship. what a wonderful thing to see - especially in the rarefied cosmopolitan atmosphere of new york, where too-often the best elements of human culture are treated as commodities and traded as social currency - that the joy of the "higher naivete" is not always drowned out by the jadedness of the "too cool for school"”Read full review »
