“I’m currently illustrating a book that takes place in rural Cambodia, and I wanted to get a picture of what Cambodia’s “origin story” is, so I looked up “history podcast about Cambodia.” This was one of the first that came up, and I’m so glad I found it. Lachlan has become my daily companion as I illustrate this simple story about a small Khmer girl who wrestles with inner fears and worries. I think about all the things that Cambodians have had to worry about and fear for so many years, as more and more layers are revealed through this podcast. I pray that they will indeed find freedom one day, though I feel pretty confident that a government system won’t be the answer to that prayer. :/
Anyway, I’ve learned so much from this podcast, not only about Cambodia but about communism and the Vietnam war, and lots of other things that I’ve had a vague notion about but could not have described before. Thank you, Lachlan, for your thoughtful and descriptive podcast! I feel like you’ve made Cambodia “real,” whereas before it was sort of just an un-illuminated blurry spot on my inner map of the world.”
