Did you guys happen to mention the golden triangle of poppy, the Indochina oil field. CIA Air America shipping out the drugs. False flag in the Gulf of tonkins, Jim Morrison’s father being the admiral on the navy ship. Pol pot, Sihanouk, Mao was all in Paris at some point. What they doing is...Read full review »

I’m currently illustrating a book that takes place in rural Cambodia, and I wanted to get a picture of what Cambodia’s “origin story” is, so I looked up “history podcast about Cambodia.” This was one of the first that came up, and I’m so glad I found it. Lachlan has become my daily companion as I...Read full review »

This is such an excellent podcast - richly detailed without being confusing, extremely well produced and deeply passionate about the subject material. Highly recommend!

Love how comprehensive it is. I don’t even mind the wait between episodes. It is hard to hear at times with your pleasant voice. I have my volume up all the way. Is there a way to turn the microphone up? Thanks for all your hard work.

Great overview of the antecedents to the horrors of the Khmer Rouge. Very helpful context prior to my first visit to Cambodia.

So well researched balanced and documented - an addictive podcast that truly should receive the highest recommendation !!

Excellent and enjoyable though a slightly misleading title, in that we’re 2 seasons and a million hours in and we still haven’t got to 1975 yet. So much more a complete history of Cambodia and less of a digestible overview of the events of Year Zero under the KR. Probably best to listen to a...Read full review »

One of the best podcasts I have heard. I’m sad I didn’t know about this before visiting Cambodia, but hearing it makes me want to go back and see so much more of this tragic and frighteningly recent history.

For the journey and giving us context of the WHY? This podcast informs you of not how Cambodia but a history of the colonist, the fall and rise of narcissist dictators and tyrants in and around Asia.

I’m amazed at the level of interesting detail this podcast has detailed. If visiting Ankor Wat is a ‘must’ do when visiting Cambodia, this podcast is a ‘must’ listen before visiting Cambodia.

I’m traveling to Cambodia in the coming weeks for the first time. I know very little of Cambodian history beyond the fact of the horrible genocide, let alone Southeast Asian history. So well researched and amazingly presented. We are listening to this while travelling the region and it has opened our eyes to so many things. The way he (/they) research this huge topic and pack it in great examples and story-telling is super impressive and catchy. Highly recommend !

Certainly a great podcast and it’s nice to get this much depth about a (somewhat) obscure country. But some things could be improved: excessive signposting about what is coming next / the arrangement of the given episode, talking a bit too slowly, and sometimes talking as if the listener is...Read full review »

Lachlan approaches history in the same manner as the best historians. Any period of significance cannot be viewed in isolation, but instead must be understood in the context of the various other connecting threads that led to a given moment. This means that the series is obviously quite long,...Read full review »

You are doing such a fantastic job, well done. The depth of your research and deep interest in the topic makes this one of the best topical podcasts I have come across so far. I may have to cite this podcast in my research paper on the economic legacy of the Khmer Rouge period. :)

The depth and detail of this podcast is only comparable to some of Dan Carlin’s work. The topic is compelling. For a critical piece of modern history that is generally ignored or misunderstood, it is incredibly well researched and presented.
