Not slow, subtle. And beautiful. And inspiring.
I went into this cold. All I knew was that it was under the same banner as Welcome to Nightvale. The first episode left me wondering: was this going to be some metaphysical ghost story? Was it going to be cringe comedy about ancient obsessions? Nope, and nope. The first episodes aren't slow, they're subtle. They're the beginning of a gradually flowering story about memory, music, and identity told with delicacy and nuance. The big and obvious gestures and emotions come from a deeper, more reflective place that becomes clear as the series goes on. The arc of this story has more than once left me with tears on my face. And more importantly, it's made me think hard about memory, nostalgia, and my own obessions, and how those things define who and what I am. I love Night Vale and many of their other shows (Alice isn't Dead, Within the Wires, Conversations with People Who Hate Me) but this one is just a total fail.
