Fantastic podcast (when it’s being a podcast)
Half of this show is a really insightful and funny look into the works of Stephen King. Half of it (moreso in recent episodes, with the one on It being especially bad) is unnecessarily granular breakdowns of the racism, sexism, ableism, etc. present in these works, many of which contain words that suggest an abominable quality to both book and author that in many cases paints the praise they otherwise give the work in an unintended light. They will go to great lengths to make King look as bad as possible, treating unreliable and dated sources like Dance Macabre as gospel and making many statements along the lines of “reading into it this way is bad literary criticism, BUT…” in order to cast as negative of a light as they can cast at the expense of their own credibility. The podcast is hosted by two cis straight white men, which makes their specific comments on King’s racism in particular telling at best and hypocritical at worse, and the fact that they mock King’s feelings of white guilt in a podcast where the hosts’ white guilt is such tangible subtext is just laughable. The vibe I get from the podcast is that Michael and Cameron are doing everything they can to prove that they are good leftists so that if a violent leftist revolution happens (it won’t) and said violence inevitably turns towards the “elite” that is C-list YouTubers, podcasters and Internet personalities, they have something to show to prove they have the right ideals and don’t deserve the guillotine. Michael and Cameron, if you’re reading this, know that you’ve done enough to be spared and you can stop with the 20-minute sidebars about how it’s worse to be a centrist liberal than it is to be an actual bigot. The podcast itself is five stars. The ideological alibi sections are zero stars. Split the difference and round down, simple as that.

More reviews of Just King Things
I was looking for a good Stephen King podcast, and this delivers. Very good, interesting analysis (I started following after the Shining episode). Strongly recommend

I’m doing this for Cameron and Michael. You two are great. I would become a patron myself, but I just got let go at work. Someone listening to you read this should become a patron for me, because you all make some amazing content. Even if the Canadian of the two of you is so grumpy. :) Long...Read full review »

I had to leave a five star review not just for Steve but for Cowboy Michael, the 4.5 hour It episode that would last you nearly a cross country flight length’s of time, and the flagrant Bob Dylan hate. If you love King but also miss having a cool literature professor, this podcast is great.
