“I’ve been a big fan of Mark Kermode for many years; I don’t always agree with his conclusions or readings of a film, but I am always impressed with the sheer depth of his knowledge and infectious passion for film. I was very excited by the prospect of him doing a film podcast. However, I have been really put off by the inclusion of Jack Howard. I completely understand the decision to introduce a younger voice that represents a departure from the old, white, male norm of film criticism, but I am still struggling to understand why Jack Howard?! He seems to be enthused by some films, sure, and knows some stuff, sure. However, there are enormous gaps in his knowledge which makes this podcast sound like a film expert talking to some really annoying and entitled millennial bloke from down the pub who thinks he knows loads about films because he can tell you every film that Ben Affleck has been in. For the record, I am a millennial, so this is nothing to do with Jack’s age, and everything to do with his lack of qualifications. I would much rather have seen Mark paired with a younger woman or poc or both who actually has the knowledge necessary to spar with the great Mark Kermode, and there are many out there!! I implore you, please stop including him.”
