“Kermode brings literary quality while Jack Howard supplements with YouTube charisma. There is a clear generational divide here when the latter claims Martin Scorsese’s The Departed is his best film.
I didn’t know who Jack Howard was before I listened, and I still don’t. I don’t understand why he is in most of these episodes. I understand up to a point, as he clearly has chemistry with Mark; that’s always important in a podcast team. But Jack’s taste in film is mainstream and vacuous. He’s out of his depth.
Some have noted his age, but it’s not even that; he’s nearly 30. I’m only 4 years older and wouldn’t call myself young exactly. My friends and I were indulging in much more interesting films in 1st year at uni. While Mark recommends something left-field, Jack states films we all have heard of and seen 1-2-3 times already. His opinions are rather bland, and is virtually guaranteed to say he’s never seen a film when Mark is talking about one, even a classic.
I don’t mind a format of elder Jedi educating a padawan; but the padawan doesn’t seem to have any curiosity beyond his narrow view of the world. To become a really great critic, one needs to be well versed and have curiosity about film that spans countries, genres, and time etc. Jack doesn’t have this curiosity, and is probably best left to carry on with his YouTube reviews about mainstream films we’ve formed a solid opinion of already.
Kermode, his intellect and knowledge remains consistently brilliant; and the episodes Jack-less are well worth listening to.”
