Ignore the misogyny and there’s a good podcast in here
There’s an awful lot to like in this podcast, which features the UK’s foremost film critic and a cast of great interviewees. The latter tend to comprise those who work in lesser-known areas of the film industry and make much more compelling subjects than the typical revolving door or Hollywood stars trotting out tired anecdotes. Kermode’s lack of snobbishness and commitment to independent cinema are commendable, and this podcast allows him the room to indulge his passions more than his BBC content can (and is all the better for it). His collaborator offers little more than a youthful foil, with his contributions feeling more performative than heartfelt. This can occasionally become egregious (such as the slander of a popular children’s author for defending women’s rights), but if one can overlook these transgressions then there’s a great deal to learn here. Worth listening to the episodes with Kermode alone interviewing members of the film industry and skipping the remainder, which may appeal to more adolescent tastes.
