They're allowed to not like cruises
I'm really excited to hear more episodes and see where they're going to take this. I was reading some of the other reviews and was surprised to see a few people calling the hosts pretentious or insufferable. I get the temptation - they're on a cruise, they don't like it, they brought David Foster Wallace, you can hear the air quotes when they call the cruise art "art.". I don't remember if they explain why they were on a cruise they didn't actually want to be on - that definitely would have helped. Was it for this podcast? Was it a gift? A drunken decision? BUT they're literally going out of their way to try to find the value in something that isn't normally their cup of tea, to try to understand why it works for so many different kinds of people. It's ok to not like cruises or pre-packaged experiences and it's ok to talk candidly about your preferences. It wouldn't be ok to actually look down on cruise goers, which I didn't think they were doing. They were going out of their way to connect with and learn from other people on the cruise, to hear and tell parts of their stories. I don't think people would have opened up to them like their subjects did if the hosts were elite pretentious snobs. You can hear the hosts actually care and connect with the people they're talking to - that to me is much more of a determining factor when deciding whether or not a stranger is a snob. Again, I understand that on the surface this episode has all the ingredients for being very pretentious. But if you listen to it without already deciding it is, I don't think you'll walk away with that conclusion. Not sure what to expect from this show moving forward, but I'm definitely intrigued.Read full review »

These stories are good ones and is what I need during these crazy times. My eyes have been opened on a number of issues and made me look into criminal reform and poverty more closely. Thanks.
