“I’ve been learning to code(HTML, CSS, JavaScript with jQuery, Ruby, Sinatra, Rails) for five months through online programs such as Skillcrush, CodeSchool, and Codeacademy.
I like that podcast is a question/answer interview format. I think that Laurence asks questions that a new coder like me would ask. So far I’ve listened to the first three episodes. My favorite is with Astrid, because she described how her career path has meandered to include tech so that she could become more independent at work, even though she was also able to keep pursuing her non-tech passion of anthropology. For me, it’s so important and helpful to hear real people talk about their careers in tech, where/how they learned(bootcamp, CS major in college, …) so that I can figure out what my next steps should be when I feel ready enough to start looking for tech work.
I also think Laurence does a good job finding people who offer different perspectives on learning to code and how quickly you can use those skills to get a job. Both Adda Birnir and Astrid said that you can find work with just a good understanding of HTML and CSS, while Chris Lee is in the camp of “make sure you understand the fundamentals of programming, because the languages and frameworks can all change on you.”
The spoken podcast is great complement to the website Learntocodewith.me because when you hear a person talk, you can hear their inflections and emphasis in their speech to know what they really think is important. It balances out all the reading and linked articles of the website, which is a resource in its own right.”
