Wondery ruin the medium
The potential here lies in interesting (in this case serious) subjects, knowledgeable presenters and the magic of the podcast medium, which comes from more time & space for the natural spontaneity, character & quality of presenters to come out. In their eagerness to copy and paste successful formulas & monetize, wondery have destroyed that magic with a clunky, artificial assembly of box ticking talent and space filling segments off a backroom production line. Here the presenters have no time to make this podcast their own, establish a convincing relationship or show any genuine personality. When not being interrupted by too many ads for other shows, they’re constantly jumping in & out of fictionalised scenes scripted by researchers that sound facile & as if aimed at schoolchildren. It adds up to a bitty, frustrating and totally unengaging experience. The producers/directors/company that made this clearly don’t understand what makes podcasts work. A gloriously simple medium ruined by opportunist bandwagon-jumpers.

I really enjoyed the episodes! There are events that should be discussed and I think that some history people don’t want to discuss because it is uncomfortable and I think that by discussing it we can make sure that it doesn’t happen again.

… through a coarse and tiresome political ideology. And thus it is no longer what some of us understand as ‘history’. No thanks.

This podcast would have been much improved if there’d been more about Picasso and less personal opinion from the hosts, particularly in the second & third episodes.
