70 | How open are you to learning from others on your career development journey?
Description
Too often, when we are unhappy in our jobs, we think that changing jobs will solve the problem. As a result, we spend countless hours scouring job boards for a new opportunity (which depending on your level of success could leave you feeling worse about yourself and your professional value). In today’s episode I will share why that is the number 1 mistake to avoid if you are unhappy in your career.
I have personally spent more hours of my life searching jobs boards for another opportunity that would allow me to escape a job I was unhappy in… in effect.. at those low points, I was simply looking for an escape plan… largely because I still had bills to pay and didn’t fully understand at the time how to own my value and position myself for the types of roles that would light me up because they were based on what I was naturally good at and interested in… so here are my 5 mistakes to avoid.
Don’t simply change jobs - first identify the root cause of your unhappiness.
Thinking clinical practice is all you can do – There are a whole range of non-clinical skills you gain in the course of your clinical career which can be translated to other roles more aligned with your interests.
Believing you are the problem – This calls for lots of introspection... and accepting that there isn't a one size fits all model for health professions graduates.
Focusing on hard skills only – more and more organisations are recognising the value of soft skills. Communication, teamwork, empathy. If you think of clinical practice context, most people if given the choice, would choose the doctor or nurse who was kind, patient, who listened to their problem and truly cared over one who had the fanciest equipment or better technical knowledge.
Not recognising the value of a personal brand – If you want to position yourself for growth-oriented roles, especially non-clinical ones, you need to think of yourself as a brand – and have some degree of presence online, ensuring that your public-facing content aligns with how you want to be perceived or the value you have to deliver.
