INFORMED, ENGAGING & FUN!!!
When I set out in search of a new podcast series, I am looking for some very specific criteria. A "necessary condition" is that the podcast's content is informed, accurate and reliable. So, I usually try to find an episode in the podcast series where I "already know quite a bit", then listen, to determine if I can entrust my podcaster's words in other episodes, where I "know nothing at all". Literature and History always and easily passes this test. The content is accurate and thoughtfully organized. Now once that "necessary condition" is met, I also require a podcast to meet some additional criteria: it has to entertain! I spent enough years of my life sitting in lecture halls, listening to undeniably brilliant, but profoundly boring professors. Now I will only consistently listen to a podcast if it "entertains": if the lecturer not only knows his (her) stuff, but can package it into an clever, witty, and stimulating package. And this is where Literature and History really shines. The podcaster - Doug Metzger - is a joy to listen to. After a few episodes, you will begin to think of Doug not as some disembodied voice, but as a really smart, really witty, and delightfully entertaining friend. Finally, the production values of Literature and History are first rate: clean, polished, impeccable audio that is endlessly easy on the ears. My highest and most enthusiastic endorsement! Jeff: creator of Trojan War: The Podcast.Read full review »

I studied history and philosophy, but really neglected literature in my academic training. This podcast has inspired me to remedy this deficiency in my knowledge. This podcast is marvelous and hilarious.

Even if you've taken university courses and read anthologies of these works, you'll be amazed by how much Doug adds with his own experiences, insights, and original(!) music compositions that are littered throughout. Wonderful podcast.Read full review »
