The main idea is in its title
I love this podcast! Generally, Doug begins by giving a little background on the work (why it's significant, when it was written, who wrote it, and so forth); then, he gives a thoughtful, entertaining summary of the work he's talking about; lastly, he talks at length about the historical context of the work: how people recorded or understood literature at the time, who was at war with whom, whether or not there was a terrible drought or something. Doug gives compelling, interesting readings of the texts he's talking about. He talks about how the armor described in Homer shows that the epic poems were written and revised over a long period of time, for example, and he talks about how the doublets in the Pentateuch suggest that it was an amalgamation of different shorter stories. This podcast will refresh your memory on world history and many of the big name classics.Read full review »

I studied history and philosophy, but really neglected literature in my academic training. This podcast has inspired me to remedy this deficiency in my knowledge. This podcast is marvelous and hilarious.
