This show is poorly researched
A life insurance trust that makes gifts For the purchase of insurance on the lives of several family members is a very typical estate planning technique. Also, insurance is the hardest asset to collect when death is in suspicious circumstances bc it won’t pay if there’s more than 50% likelihood that there is foul play on behalf of a beneficiary. I think the failure to mention that makes this reporting irresponsible. The year that this happened, the estate tax was imposed on a very low dollar amount and that kind of planning was super common for people as a house could push you over the limit. I’m just not convinced by anything that the reporter said that Fred was guilty. The sad thing is that the child died. I believe that whatever the jury heard was persuasive but that wasn’t discussed at all. Bad podcast.

Dana Goodyear is such a fantastic narrator. One feels one is being captained down the river of sort of a Malibu Heart of Darkness. Intriguing and fascinating. If you like true crime or just a really well told story, this is for you.

Loved episodes 1&2, and just listened to episode 3 — and it was fantastic. The interview with Erica Wu, Tristan Burdette’s wife, was heartbreaking, but handled with compassion and empathy. The unfolding of this case keeps me on the edge of my seat and I can’t wait for episode 4.
