Good exploration of the agit-prop genre
The one star reviews of this podcast are hiliarious! It's like bonus content! Actually this is a good show, that started as a way to explore an underexamined genre in film: the earnest liberal agit-prop movie. I never watched any of these but they would be frequently mentioned in left-leaning and anti-war publications in the Bush era. They always sounded terrible to me, so I never watched them. I'm glad to hear I was correct. The hosts dunk on the self-seriousness and lack of message that films like this reflect. As this genere is rather limited, they've moved on to the political aspect of other films. Viewing films through a partisan political lense can be painful if it's done wrong, but the hosts have so far done it quite right. They acknowledge good things - if there are any - and understand quality filmmaking is not the same as ideological correctness. I particularly enjoy when the talk about films they unironically enjoy, like Chaplin's Great DIctator or Kazan's Face in the Crowd. I can't recall disagreeing with their critical judgement, though eventually it will happen. Until then, though, this podcast is tops!Read full review »
