If there are better film podcasts out there, then I am unlikely to find out. The Micheux Mission is entertaining and informative on a level that many critical shows fail to reach. Len Webb runs a tight podcast which keeps the show from wandering too far from entertaining critical discussion. This is will get overlooked by the sheer joy of listening to Vince Williams talk. Just be aware, that it is how they interact that really makes the show shine. They are professionals and friends. Their banter is doesn't suffer from them talking over each other, and they converse familiarly without leaving the audience out of the conversation with inside references. Something that is important to note about the podcast is their depth of knowledge. They know the films, which is important, but that's not all. Their knowledge about the subjects of the films, the history of both film and culture, and the actors/directors in both biographical detail as well as ability; just stand out as a testament to how much care and effort they put into each episode, even if the film is just a frippery. The tag-line may be "2 men, 1 podcast, every black film ever," but it goes beyond that. Just the discussion about what a "black film" is, which recurs in subsequent episodes, remains a vital part of the Mission. Every film they do, whether weighty material like "Eve's Bayou" or a trifle like "The Monkey Hustle" receives full and valid critique. There are hidden gems along the way, such as the film "Uptight," which is so much better than its poster on Amazon will tell you. Occasionally, they have guests on the show. Each and every guest has only brought more depth or different perspectives to the show, and demonstrate how good Len and Vince are at sharing their time. I’m younger than most, in terms of the target audience for this particular show but at times I feel as though it really connects to me on a deeper level as though I’m right on the side of these gentleman during the recording process. As a young man on the verge of entering the third decade of his...Read full review »
