Intriguing subjects
The podcast is well structured and explores interesting themes and subjects. However, I find it surprising that a criminal psychologist can so easily dismiss the impact of developmental and relational trauma on an individual’s psyche in adulthood, particularly in the case of Dahmer. It is well documented that trauma and attachment disruptions experienced at key points in neurological development (most notably from the third trimester to three years of age and again in adolescence) cause a shift in neurological pathways and can certainly contribute to a person’s maladaptive behaviours in adulthood. There were plenty of red flags in Dahmer’s development that, albeit subtle, could could hold some account for his disturbing behaviours in later life. His mother’s depression, his father’s abandonment, the difficulties in his parent’s relationship, lack of supervision…to name but a few. No one knows what goes on behind closed doors, even in a middle class family with seemingly well meaning parents. It is naive to assume otherwise.
