“This is a beautifully researched and produced podcast, and the host is capable enough vocally speaking, but why the aversion to editing? This story could be much tighter. There’s just too much undigested conversation and verite action. The unbelievably slow and repetitive conversation with the last HAM operator in that bonus episode is a good example. The chat on the boat when they were looking for the plane is another example. I could have used half that. Were it not for this extra weight, I would’ve rated it five stars. As another reviewer wrote, the ads are indeed horrible, and they have a very big footprint within this production. I still greatly appreciate the massive and rigorous work this journalist put into researching and developing this story. This is an epic effort, and despite its flaws, it’s still an excellent podcast about a fascinating mystery.
“The Island” episode got even worse after I first wrote this review! I heard about everything from the host’s desire for dinner, then the fact that they had just eaten breakfast, something about his sock - every bit of random chat seem to be worth including. I’m surprised he didn’t include info about his bowel movements. Dude, this is a good story, but you’re trying your best to drown it in irrelevant detail.”
