“I’ve been listening to this podcast since the beginning, and up until recently, I was really enjoying it. The latest episode, however, makes me feel like I’ve wasted the time I’ve spent listening to Obscura so far, and I will definitely not be listening again.
While things started out fine, I became a bit concerned when I heard the voice of an actor in the show, apparently speaking the (hypothetical?) words of the victim. This immediately seemed like it could end up being in pretty poor taste, but I stuck with the episode regardless, thinking there would be probably be some kind of reason down the line for why this was necessary or helpful to the story being told.
I cannot adequately express my disgust with what then followed, which I can only describe as an in-depth “blow by blow” of an actual rape, with the actor reading the woman’s “lines” and Justin speaking on behalf of the rapist.
While I do appreciate the value of detail in the presentation of a case, the level of specificity used here and the graphic nature of what was described were entirely unwarranted and, frankly, reeked of both voyeurism and cheap exploitation for shock value.
Yes, true crime as a genre deals with dark and uncomfortable subjects, and yes, its appeal does hinge upon a fascination with the macabre, by this is not a licence to gleefully recite the abuses suffered by a real victim, purely to try and increase listenership.
Precisely because it deals with difficult subject matter, true crime requires a high degree of caution and self-scrutiny to avoid veering into simply dramatising and exploiting the suffering of others, and I can confidently say that none of that introspection was on display in this case. The standard and content of this episode would be unacceptable in the worst of the tabloid press, and I am disappointed to encounter it in a true crime podcast that I thought had higher standards than this.
If you are still listening to Obscura after this embarrassment, I would ask yourself exactly what you, and the host, are getting out of the content he is delivering.”
