“Comic actor and comedian Black’s (Another Period, The State) latest offering is a podcast that is part journal and part audiobook w/ commentary—but one that is also fully engaging, and wholly original.
The book Black has chosen to tackle—the predominant subject of the show—is itself rather lackluster (and presumably in the public domain), but that’s what makes it a great choice: Black’s dry wit and lyrical musings thrive in the world of “Jude the Obscure.” As he reads it aloud, he can’t help but ground the characters, criticize the author’s lexicon, and ask questions that most of us just wouldn’t think to ask. It’s funny on a gut level, and one can’t help but smile when Black smashes the reality of “Jude” so effortlessly with cold, hard logic.
The other part of the show is a series of autobiographical vignettes, in which Black contemplates his “obscurity” (much of Black’s work could be described as having a cult following) and what it is like to have obscure tastes. These reflections are quite thought provoking, and a welcome—albeit very postmodern—addition to the show.
The final product is an obscure podcast that is essentially about obscurity. Kudos to Black on this production. Check it out and share it with a friend.”
